The Sleep of Reason

Disagreeing with Goya

When Reason sleeps, the Heart awakes,
Furtively, first fearful Reason only naps,
Catnaps – anxious lest feeling overtakes
Its bosom’s mate, logic, – boa-like, wraps
Feelings tight, crushing till all feeling’s dead –
Its major premise: All feelings misinform.
Its minor premise: Love’s a feeling all unread.
Its conclusion: Love does us misinform.
Still Reason sleeps; the Heart tiptoes free,
Quietly on pulsing wings begins dancing
To a music only love can hear and see,
Living its heartfelt life, free from Reason’s sins.
      Reason stirs, stretches, yawns, awakes.
The poor Heart, feigning death, almost breaks.
