Love’s Symbiosis

Our love is reckoned a kind of symbiosis.
Is it commensual, mutual or inquiline?
What, my love, is the experts’ diagnosis?
Commensual? – only one of us gains over time,
The other, they say, is not ‘adversely affected’.
True, I’ve gained, but surely not me alone.
Mutual? – a term more pointedly directed,
Since, yes, for each of us our love has grown.
Inquiline? – perhaps in those early days
I did live within you – a nutrient host
Most generous till your patience waned,
Ejecting me to stand on my own coast.
Perhaps, my love, our love is oxymoronic,
Dependently independent – a new symbiotic!
